Curriculum – Music 2026 – 2027

Music at Cotsford

At Cotsford Primary School, children are exposed to music in a variety of different forms. We use the Kapow Music curriculum, a progressive scheme of work that follows the National Curriculum and supports high-quality music teaching across the school. Through engaging and practical lessons, pupils experience a wide range of musical genres, styles, traditions and historical periods.
Kapow Music develops children’s skills through five key areas: Performing, Listening and Evaluating, Improvising and Composing, Creating Sound and Notation. Children have opportunities to sing, play tuned and untuned instruments, compose and improvise music, and explore how music is created and communicated through the inter-related dimensions of music, including pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure.
As part of our music curriculum, pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 each receive a term of specialist instrumental tuition delivered by expert teachers from Durham Music Service. These lessons allow children to develop their instrumental skills and perform as part of an ensemble, with regular opportunities throughout the year to share and celebrate their learning through performance.
Our philosophy is that music should be enjoyable, inclusive and accessible for all. We believe that every child has the potential to be a musician and that music plays an important role in personal development, creativity and self-expression. Through listening, performing and composing, children develop an appreciation of music from different cultures and traditions while building skills that will remain with them throughout their lives.
