Oracy

Oracy Vision

At Cotsford Primary School, we believe every child deserves to be heard, understood and valued. Oracy is central to our curriculum and enables pupils to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. We are committed to giving every child a voice—empowering them to express ideas, articulate their thinking and engage confidently with the world. We create a learning environment where talk is purposeful, inclusive and high-quality, ensuring all pupils—regardless of background or starting point—have equitable opportunities to develop communication skills. Oracy can be brokne into 4 strands: Physical, Linguistic, Cognitive and Social & Emotional.

Through eplicit teaching of these skills, we aim to close gaps and enable every child to succeed.  We’re want to turn chatter into a superpower! With oracy taking center stage in our curriculum. We want our children to understand that their voice can be a powerful tool, when used properly.

We’re on a quest to help every student at Cotsford Primary Primary School unleash their inner voice superstar. With oracy, students will blossom in confidence, articulacy, and learning prowess. Our top-notch oracy education is the golden ticket, empowering every student to holler their way to success in school and beyond. Because let’s face it, whether they’re future presidents or party planners, effective communication is the key to nailing life’s challenges!

Oracy Progression Maps

We create a learning environment where talk is purposeful, inclusive and high-quality, ensuring all pupils—regardless of background or starting point—have equitable opportunities to develop communication skills. Through explicit teaching and modelling of oracy, and by cleverly weaving a range of Oracy opportunities throughout our curriculum, including discussion, debate, presentation and collaboration we aim to help children become thoughtful speakers and attentive listeners. They learn to respect different viewpoints, challenge ideas contructively and build on other’s contributions, developing both confidence and resilience.

Oracy Roadmap

We have created an Oracy Roadmap including some of the Oracy opportunities which we have planned in across the year to support our children in becoming confident Orators:

Establishing expectations

We have worked with the children to create Cotsford’s discussion guidelines. We use these in conjunction with our talk tactics and careful groupings to help the children become confident orators.

We want children to be able to share their opinion whilst being able to respectfully challenge their peers so we have placed talk at the heart of our curriculum. Here are some examples:

Year 5 loved using Padlet to share their opinions during a class debate.
