Spring 1

In Early Years this term we have continued to sing nursery rhymes and explore musical instruments. We have had fun exploring the different sounds instruments make. We have begun to use words to help us perform different rhythms. We were very excited when we split in two and played two different rhythms at the same time.

In Year 1 learnt a class song all about the colours of the rainbow. We talked about what helps us remember songs and why repetition helps us remember other things. In our music lessons, we practised the song first by reciting the words without a tune and then adding the tune when we felt more confident. We also began to explore rhythm and pulse, and were able to keep to a beat by tapping our knee with one hand.

Year 2 have listened to different types of music including rock and pop music. They sang ‘I wanna Play in a Band’ as a whole class and used their voices expressively. They explored pitch and beat within different songs.

Mrs Preston, our Music Teacher, treated Year 3 to a performance of the Greatest Showman, which she has also performed on stage with Hugh Jackman. As well as learning new notes to play on the recorders we have also played musical quizzes to improve our understanding of musical terminology.

In Year 6 the children have listened to and appreciated a wide range of recorded music drawn from different traditions. They have also listened to a range of sounds from the war, including air raid sirens, bombing, Spitfires, the Blitz, gas mask drills and ‘all clear’ sirens. The children have explained how these sounds make them feel and the mood they create.

Autumn 2

In Early Years this term we have continued to sing nursery rhymes and explore musical instruments. We have had fun exploring the different sounds instruments make. We have rehearsed and performed several songs for parents in the nativity.

Year 1 began to explore use of the voice and percussion instruments to make space sounds. In our groups we exp

erimented with what noises an alien might make and what a spaceship flying through the starry night sky may sound like. There were some great performances when children showed their space sounds to their peers.

Year 2 have listened to different medieval music and worked on identifying instruments that were used to create the music. They compared medieval music to modern music and talked about how it differs. The children have learnt their song ‘Three kings Travelling’ and have perfected their performance.

Year 3 have continued to perfect their Christmas performance by learning to sing, play and rap the song, ‘Ho Ho Ho’. As part of our food topic we have also listened to some food related music, for example, ‘Food Glorious Food.’

In music, Year 4 have enjoyed seeing a live band perform. Pek and Wanley came to school and performed a set which included a range of songs and genres of music. Through this they have learned a variety of vocabulary. They understand what pitch is and how it differs using higher and lower notes. They have listened to a variety of music and discussed their likes and dislikes as a class. As a class, the children learnt a series of songs linked to the nativity which they performed for parents.

The Year 5 children have enjoyed using the Ipad app ‘Garage Band’ to create their own jingle for Alchemy Island. They began by making simple repeated notes, then developed these to compose a musical theme tune. Finally, Year 5 added lyrics and performed in front of the class.

Year 6 have enjoyed listening to a range of music genres. They have listened to live and pre-recorded Mexican music and have enjoyed identifying instruments played in the pieces. During the music session’s they have learned about graphic scores use symbols to represent different sounds in music. The children have created their own graphic scores and composed a simple piece of music to demonstrate their ideas.

Autumn 1

This term in Music Early Years have had fun singing lots of nursery rhymes and exploring the different sounds musical instruments make.
Year 3 have begun recorder lessons with Mrs Preston and can already play notes A, B and G.
Elsewhere in Key Stage 2 we have been looking at different music genres, learning about graphic scores and performing for the class.
