English at Cotsford
Our school has adopted Pie Corbett’s Talk for Writing as a model to improve achievement in writing. There are three stages in ‘Talk for writing’ – imitate, innovate, invent. Movement from imitation to innovation to independent application can be adapted to suit needs of learners of any stage. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.
Oracy
At Cotsford, we believe oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life. We have adopted a whole school approach where we created discussion gudielines that we use to encourage positive talk throughout school.
